I knew my writing students were using AI. Their confessions led to a powerful teaching moment | Micah Nathan – The Guardian

The Secret’s Out: Students Are Cheating with AI-Powered Writing Tools

It’s a writer’s worst nightmare: students passing off someone else’s work as their own. But what happens when that someone else is a machine? As a writing instructor, I’ve long suspected that students might be using AI-powered writing tools to create their assignments, and I was right – but it’s not a black-and-white issue.

In a recent semester, I asked my students to submit a rough draft of their essays, allowing me to provide feedback before the final submission. Many students proudly shared their drafts, but a few seemed nervous, hesitating before turning in their work. When I asked if they’d used any tools to help with the writing, they confessed to using AI-powered writing assistants. I wasn’t surprised – I’d suspected as much – but I was taken aback by the sheer number of students who admitted to it. Of the 20 students in my class, 10 had used AI tools, with some even sharing screenshots of the AI-generated text.

I was initially tempted to scold them for cheating, but instead, I took a different approach. I asked the students to show me how the tools worked and to explain what they’d gained from using them. This led to a fascinating conversation about the role of AI in writing and the blurred lines between collaboration and cheating. By engaging in this discussion, I realized that students are often using AI tools not to cheat, but to learn and improve their writing skills. They were leveraging AI to develop their ideas, explore new concepts, and refine their language. This shift in perspective has given me a new appreciation for AI-powered writing tools and their potential to augment, rather than replace, human creativity.

What This Means For You

As AI-powered writing tools become increasingly sophisticated, it’s essential to recognize their potential benefits and drawbacks. While they can certainly be used to cheat, they can also be valuable resources for writers looking to improve their craft. By acknowledging the role of AI in writing and engaging in open discussions about its use, we can create a more nuanced understanding of what it means to collaborate with technology and what it means to be a writer in the 21st century.
